Kāhui Oranga Wellbeing for health
The Kāhui Oranga Programme supports and promotes wellbeing in the workplace for our health workforce. It is a collaborative partnership between the 20 District Health Boards (DHBs), unions and health sector groups. We work collectively to encourage and support wellbeing in our workplaces where our people can thrive.
The purpose of the programme is to develop, support and action wellbeing initiatives that extend maanakitanga to our workforce. This work is supported by the kahuioranga.health.nz website and is a central source of key information and resources to support wellbeing for the health workforce. The website also supports the Fatigue Management and Health and Safety national initiatives.

Key areas for wellbeing
Promoting and raising awareness of workplace wellbeing for the health workforce is a key priority for DHBs, union and health sector groups. There is a collective commitment to create environments which support people to thrive and be their best.
Kāhui Oranga is guided by the core principle that the health system starts with the wellbeing of its people and the health workforce. This extends to the wellbeing of workers as whole people and not just at work.
The mahi of Kāhui Oranga is underpinned by the World Health Organisation healthy workplaces framework and Te Whare Tapa Whā model made up of the four pou (pillars) - Taha Wairua (Spiritual dimension), Taha Hinengaro (Mental dimension), Taha Whanau (Social/Family dimension) and Taha Tinana (Physical dimension).
The programme is delivered via these key workstreams:
- Mentally Healthy Work
- Thriving in Uncertainty
- Culture and Communication
- Measuring and Monitoring
These workstreams are the foundation of the programme which will be further developed to support wellbeing for the health workforce.
